Relocation Cost Calculator: What Your Move Really Costs (2026)

A new job in another state comes with a bill most people underestimate: movers, the drive, hotels, a deposit plus first month of rent, and a dozen small setup costs. Plug in your own quotes to see the full cost, what your relocation stipend is worth after tax, and the amount that would cover everything.

Why the after-tax number matters

Most relocation stipends and lump sums are paid through payroll and taxed like wages. A $5,000 stipend can land closer to $3,500 in your account. Compare your real moving cost to the after-tax amount, not the headline number.

How to use the result in a negotiation

  • Get two or three written quotes from movers or truck and container companies.
  • Use the “pre-tax stipend to cover it all” number as your ask. It is grounded in your actual costs.
  • Ask whether the company offers a tax gross-up or direct billing to a moving company, which avoids the tax hit.
  • Ask about temporary housing for the first few weeks if you cannot sign a lease before you start.

Costs people forget

  • A security deposit and first month of rent at the same time.
  • Driver license and car registration in the new state.
  • Utility deposits and internet installation.
  • Overlap rent if your old lease runs past your move date.

All inputs are examples. Replace them with your own numbers. This is general information, not tax advice.
