How to convert salary to hourly

Divide your yearly salary by the number of hours you are paid for in a year. A full-time year is usually 40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours. For example, $75,000 ÷ 2,080 = $36.06 an hour. To go the other way, multiply your hourly rate by 2,080.

Quick shortcut: halve your hourly rate and add “thousand.” $30 an hour is about $60,000 a year ($62,400 exactly).

Hourly with overtime vs salary

This is where I see candidates get surprised. An hourly, non-exempt job with steady overtime can pay much more than the base rate suggests. The table below adds 10 overtime hours a week at time and a half.

Hourly rateYearly at 40 hrs/weekYearly with 10 OT hrs/week
$18$37,440$51,480
$20$41,600$57,200
$22$45,760$62,920
$25$52,000$71,500
$28$58,240$80,080
$30$62,400$85,800
$35$72,800$100,100
$40$83,200$114,400
$45$93,600$128,700
$50$104,000$143,000

So before you choose the “salaried” title because it sounds more senior, check whether the role is exempt and how many hours the team really works. My exempt vs non-exempt guide and the overtime calculator help you run the real numbers.

What changes your real hourly rate

  • Unpaid time off. If you take two unpaid weeks, use 50 paid weeks in the calculator.
  • Longer weeks on salary. An exempt job at $80,000 with 50-hour weeks works out to about $30.77 an hour, not $38.46.
  • Bonuses and allowances. Sign-on bonuses, relocation and per diem are separate from your rate. Ask how each one is paid before you compare offers.
